FOOD

The food…

Traditional Balinese food is primarily rice based dishes such as the staple Nasi Goreng, which is essentially a style of fried rice. There is also the noodle version of the called Mie Goreng, both normally have a beef, chicken or vegetarian option. Other delicious dishes to check out are Beef Rendeng, Gado Gado and Sate cooked over hot coals, all very tasty!

Places to eat…

To get the most authentic Balinese food, go to places called a ‘warung’, the traditional warungs will have the food on display behind glass at the front of the building, and from here you point out what you want, from different styles of rice, to different protein based dishes and vegetable dishes. The price of these meals will depend on how many different serves of each dish you order, but are usually the most inexpensive way to eat on Bali. Theres not many fresh food markets, but many many convenience stores, which can be fairly expensive to buy groceries from, so its normally cheaper and easier to simply eat out.

Aside from warungs, theres many different restaurant options, and the busier the area is, the more options you will have, ranging from traditional Indonesian, to other cultural delights such as Mexican, Japanese, Australian and the list goes on. So if your feeling home sick, or seeking something different, you will have options near by.

Don’t drink the water..!

Do not drink the tap water! Its fine for showering and washing, but not fit for human consumption, and with bottled water being available everywhere for cheap, your asking for trouble if you do.
