Kuta is the tourism capital of Bali, being only a stone throw away from the airport, its also the cheapest to get to by taxi.
Here, you will find a plethora of accomodation options, ranging from super cheap hostels to high end 5 star resorts, and everything in between. Its a very congested/ built up area, being only about 2km long by 1km in width from the beach.
The perks of this area is, basically anything you need, is within walking distance, many different types of restaurants, bars, shopping, entertainment, waterbom water slide park and beaches.
The down side is its very congested and busy, some love this, others (like myself!) loath it. You will get harassed by road side merchants to check out their goods for sale, and they can be very persistent, so if you do shop with them, be prepared to haggle! General rule of thumb is 50% off their first price. There are also beauty treatment spas by the tens of dozens, that also offer massage services.
If a super busy atmosphere is not your vibe, fear not, there are many other options available!
For surfers, you will find beach breaks of ok quality, but is more suited for beginners, where there are many surf schools. There is some reef breaks, out front of Discovery shopping centre, and for a small fee, out rigger boats will take you too the outer reefs at the end of the airport runway that offer some fairly crowd free, fun rippable walls and occasional barrels.
